Thermastat, which end of the block?

I was tinkering with one of my extra HSC 4cylinders heads and noticed something. The thermastat is on the tranny end of the head. No big deal for a E-W engine. But there is also a similar shaped indention on the pulley end of the head also.

I'm pretty sure on a 200 that the thermastat and housing is on the pulley end of the engine, but I want to be sure.

Would Ford get that lazy when they chopped down the 200 to make an HSC to leave an indication of a thermastat housing in the casting?

Might have been covering their options. There's a 2" plug in the rear end of a six head. It has on occasion crossed my mind to put it to some use...

Thanx for the info. I've got 2 extra heads. As soon as I get them dug back out, I'll snap some pics of the holes in question, examine them deeper, and ponders.

What kind of use would you put the extra hole in the rear of your head too?

I was wondering about coolant flow modifications. Just combined with ideas for a motor that might ultimately make it run warmer than stock. The detonation problems I've seen that really caused damage (like holed pistons) were in the back half of the head; usually 5, sometimes 6. No firm plans, but there's enough meat around it to drill and tap a couple of holes for a small thermostat housing.
