Tune up questions

Just bought a 66 coupe with the 200. It runs, but not well. It will not start on it's own but if you pour some fuel down the carb it will start and then it will run on it's own. It runs rough but will rev up and idle. Under load it dies. So far all I've done is run a new fuel line from the tank to the pump. I plan on doing standard oil, filter, plugs, cap, rotor, wires and timing. Anything else to keep in mind? Also, where can I find a cap and rotor? Local Checkers doesn't even have a listing. I also have no experiance with points, where's a good place to learn? Thanks, Matt
 
Matt - You can never go wrong with a reproduction FACTORY shop manual. The one made by Ford, not Chilton or Haynes. They sell for about $40 at most Mustang parts vendors.

Either go back to that Checkers and find someone that knows how to use a parts book (actually look up the part #s) or find another parts store. Any store (even Checkers) should have these on the shelf.
 
u havent said anything about rebuilding or getting a new carb...thats probably where i would have gone after making sure timing n stuff was good.
 
Yeah I was thinking about the carb but hadn't decided what I was going to do with it yet. Within the next couple of months I'm going to completely rebuild this motor and will probably go with a different carb then. Any recomendations? Until then I'm stuck with this one. What are rebuild kits like $20? I might just do that for now.
 
Ok, changed the plugs, cap and rotor and wires. Timing is ok. It still starts and revs fine, no sputtering or dead spots. But as soon as you put it in gear and try to take off it dies. If it is a bad carb why would it idle and rev but not run under load? By the way it's a 3spd manual. Clutch and gears sem fine. Car rolls no proble as well.
 
i had that problem before too. check the timing...although that shouldnt kill u unless its way off...make sure all your vacuum hoses are hooked up properly, best thing to do is get a rebuildkit for the carb now..u may have a bad accelerator pump or something...not quite sure what the problem was with mine, but i replaced the entire shoke system and it worked fine again...i am not the greatest trouble shooter, but i always like to check the timing and vacuum hoses first...then i figgure the rest is with the carb
 
Vacuum leaks or low engine vacuum? You might want to confirm that the vacuum advance on the distributor is indeed advancing the timing. Maybe you are not getting any advance other than the initial timing.
 
acelerator pump?

I say rebuild the carb now or it wont run until the time you plan your rebuild

or buy a used one n slap it on...that what I did. $25 and I good to go

66 fastback coupe, thanks for the tip, that sounds like a good place to look. How do I check that the vac advance is working properly?
 
wish I knew...accordng to the manual...to set it properly, you should get a professonal...or ask people here
 
I am going to assume you have an Autolite 1100 carb with the Load-O-Matic distributor. This combination is on my 66 Falcon so it might be on yours too. A quick way to check is to look inside your distributor. If it has weights and does not rely solely on vac. advance then tuning your vac. advance is kinda a gut feeling thing and hard to do objectively from what I have read.

If you do have the same combination mentioned above then you ONLY have vacuum advance. Idle your car and look at the timing with your light. Push on the throttle and watch the timing. If it does not advance then your vacuum advance is not working properly.

Here is a page that I think is a champ at explaining how to time your engine, but be warned that it focuses heavily on a dual advance system, with both weights and vacuum advance. As previously mentioned, the Load-O-Matic system does not have centrifugal advance, which is created by using weights.

Reving the engine and using a timing light will give an indication of how much it is advancing and whether or not it is functioning. You can also check to see if the diaphram is leaking by either applying a mighty vac vacuum pump or sucking on the hose connected to the vacuum cannister. It should hold vacuum. You can also pop the distributor cap while doing this and verify that the rod connected to the vacuum cannister is rotating the distributor plate when vacuum is applied.
