Installed new cam, Fired it up last night with new battery. I was surprised that it was not as rough idling as I thought it would be. 200 rpm seems to make all the difference at 800rpm its rough and irregular (not like I imagined lopey would be?). But increase it just 200 rpm to 1000 rpm and almost all the roughness is gone.
Ill re-register it today and take it for a spin tonight.
If this is what a lopey idle sounds something like I think I would prefer not to have it at all and idle a bit higher (1000rpm) (besides at 800 it rattles my exhaust on the underside of the car).
Anyone else with similar experience?
Tim

A lopey idle from a cam doesn't sound or feel the same as when the idle is set too low or the idle mixture is off. The car shouldn't seem like its about to stall. It will just kind of rev slightly in a regular pattern. The idle should not be irregular because of the cam. It's more likely the carburetor, probably the idle mixture. Check the timing too. Just turn the distributor back and forth with the engine running until you find the spot with the highest idle and that's a decent place to start.

What cam are you using? I used a comp cam 260H, and no lopeyness at all.

personally, I wouldn't idle about 700 RPM, but that's just me. Waste of gas.

Cam is a Wade 210.5/222 at 50 with 108 LSA
Yeh, timing was out and is better now but. Idle is same not pleasant to listen to like old 204 at 50 cam. I wanted a bit of a rough idle thats why I got 108 LSA but it sounds like a heap of rubbish at 800 rpm and nice at 1000 rpm. Until I sort it (if i can) Ill probably just run it at 1000rpm to save the embarrassment.

Tim: Remember a high idle can lead to overheating problems.

Slade: What do you have your idle set at and how many pounds of vacuum are you pulling?

Tim, with a 108 lobe center you will have to live a radical idle. I hope you have a stick shift, otherwise you will have to live this monster cam which you installed. good luck if your not satisified with the cam go to a 110 or a 112 lobe center. v/r william :!:

Someone on this forum said one of the old GTs used to have to run at about 1200 rpm so I am not really concerned if I have to run it a 1000 rpm. Just would have prefered it to be a bit choppy and rythmical rather than sort of "all over the place" at lower idle. Although I heard another cam in an old Ford V8 recently that sounded just like it.
Thanks Cheers.

my normal idle is around 600 RPM, pulling about 16-18 inHG. Idles extremely smooth. The 260 is not a wild cam, but isn't far from the Wade cam described exhaust for the exhaust duration.

260: 260/260 - 212/212 - .440 - 110* - 1000-5000

my choked idle is around 1000.

Tim, in all honesty, sounds like you have other tuning issues. Go back through everything. I know when I switched heads, it has taken me about 3-4 weeks to isolate all the new tuning issues. i still have one more to fix, my carb is running slightly lean according to the plugs, so time to jet up.
