hey,

i have heard it is relatively easy to put the electronic ignition from an XE into a pre crossflow, but how do you modify the shaft size to fit, do you need anything else besides the dizzy and coil? Would it be easier to put an electronic fuel pump in as well?

Thanks
Tom

crane etc sell kits to change your old points dizzy into electric,i think the hole in the block is also different so you may need to put a sleeve on the dizzy so it fits properly.im going to go the kit for my xa.

I'm told there is a press-in 40 thou block sleeve available. It's apparently to address similar isues with the Clevo blocks.

My approach was the old-school one - use a donor dizzy (XT-XB) for the shaft and gear, then rebush an XE unit with the donor shaft. A couple of places in Melbourne can do it for you.

if it is the same larger shaft as a US 250/200 then you can use a lima 2.3L OHC dissy for it. just pop on a 6cyl can and reluctor and put on the 200/250 cam gear.

I just had mine done by performance ignitions (thanks addo) in Melbourne and they did a top job. Was a bit pricy, but all I did was post them one (XE dizzy) I bought off eBay for 10 bucks, and they completely reconditioned it and wired it up to plug directly into my msd box, even colour coded the wires, had it back in a week or so and went straight in and fired up straight away.

thanks for the info, i bought the dizzy and coil for $50 its from an xe.
the coil looks weird, nothing like the old one.

Does anyone have a pic of their coil so i can make sure i have the right thing, and can anyone say if electronic ignition is any better than standard, does it give you more power?

Bosch made the Ford ones. I like the aftermarket HEC-716, but apparently the MEC-series coil is actually the intended replacement.

Make sure it gets a full 12V with nice fat wire unless there is an "R"at the end of the coil's name - like GT-40R. Those ones need an inline resistor.

They need an excellent ground, too. Mounting the coil on the shock tower is usually pretty successful and keeps the motor looking cleaner.

Hi i fitted a XE dizzy to my XB ute with a 250 pre crossflow all i did was to machined off the hold down foot to the same diameter as the old points dizzy , Add a stud to the block and filed down the hold down tab. the cam drive is the same the oil pump drive is the and dizzy housing diameter is the same , run the same electronic coil as the XE and wirer up the same , i had no problems with this set up , no oil leaks easier starting AND more POWER
get inline!

You will have to check the voltage at the coil. If it is only 8.8V you will have to find the ballast resistor and get rid of it. If it is anything like a TE cortina Ford used a really long silicone coated red wire which wound along the loom in the dash a couple of times before going out to the engine bay to the coil. You may have to find this wire, snip it off and run a new wire out to the coil to do the job properly.

do you know where you can get these block sleeves?

Wish I did! Have you tried any of the Cleveland rebuild specialists like Sircar in Melbourne?
