Flex fan

i want to be a little more comfortable with the cooling on 64.5 convert.I was told by a Ford dealer to switch out my fan for a flex fan and have seen them on Summit.Do these help alot or is it minor?Do I need just the fan or do I need the spacers etc with this?I changed all the coolant and put in a new tstat. It is running a little cooler.

Thanks

SteveStang,

Some people on here swear by them others curse them, I'm one that curses them...
My experience related in a new radiator, battery, and hood when the flex fan tore apart, not to mention that I'm using the 3rd hood since i've owned the car
But that's besides the point...

I think the flex fan will give you what you want, you might have to rev the engine to keep it cooler, you'll need a spacer, I think close is good, but any less than 1 inch from anywhere on the radiator is too close, the spacer might be a hit and miss but you'll like it over the stock fan.
another difference is the fan sound, you'll hear the fan more when you rev and less engine/exhaust

IMO, I like the electric fan, it's full blast all the time in traffic, keeping the engine, and Me cool (AC). It's less of a power draw, I noticed a lot of extra power when I switched over, and I haven't broken/squealed any belts since. not to mention I went from 21 to 25.5 mpg on the road (with AC off) so the electric fan keeps pay'n for itself :)

Any way's good luck!

Thanks for the reply.Where would I get info on the electric fan or do you know what I need for my car.

Thanks Again

I bought a 6 blade fan from NPD. It is defineatly more noisy and I did have to use a different spacer.
It keeps the car cooler for sure though.

Stevestang,

sorry for the late response, I get so easily distracted on this forum.

for my setup I did go a little bit on the expensive route, only because I wanted this to work very well, and not deal with it again. (I tried dual 9 inch fans offset with bad results with the AC on)

here is the link to the fan I bought, although I'm glad i didn't pay the current price.

I went with this fan due to the fact that it sits 2 5/8 inches high (low profile) and it pulls a wooping 2400cfm, the other benefit is that it covers 77% of the radiator surface. I did have the plasitc ties on but I disliked them as they moved the fan and bent fins. So I built my own brakets for the fan, I'll take a pic and post it later tonight.

I have a 65 mustang, made in december of 64, so I assume my car is very simular in the engine-radiator room. I had to "persuade" with a 2.5 lbs hammer the radiator support to push the radiator forward, I gained about an inch, I know it's not pretty but you don't see it. the fan fits with enough room to fit a fan belt between pulley and fan so I can change it easily if I need to on the road.

I did have a fan controller to trigger the fan to turn on at X temp (170*???) but when it got too hot it burnt out, so currently I have a switch controlled by me, I find it conveinient and inconvienient at the same time.

I am very pleased with the performance of this fan, I would gladly recomend this fan to others. just stay away from cheap temp controllers as I havn't had any luck yet.

link is my previous post where I got mine... u can shop for cheaper prices.

2 pos and 1 neg, I wired with an on/off switch in my car.

I had a flex fan.

I neither curse it or love it. I removed it. They are LOUD, but they do pull some serious air.

That being said, I'm one of those that feels the flex fan is a band aid for some other ailment in your cooling system. With a cooling system in proper working order, no reason you engine shouldn't stay at the right temperature unless you are in serious extremes (with are rare in Ontario).

If you are running warm, consider an overhaul of your system.

1) Replace Cooling Hoses
2) Replace water pump
3) Replace T Stat
4) Flush the cooling system

If after flushing several times, you still get rust out of the system, you likely have a bad radiator and it needs to be replaced or recored.

If it is a bad radiator, consider going with a 3 core radiator in place of the stock 2 core. They are the same size and can not be easily distinguished between the two types.

AFter I did all the above, Even on days sitting in 95+*F traffic jams, my car still runs right at my T-stat temperature with just my stock 4 blade fan.

Thanks
I did replace the rad a few years ago with a 3 core.I just had a new stat put in and new coolant.I have not replaced the hoses or water pump and that will be my next step.It has never overheated and stays right in the middle of temp gauge usually but on a really hot day like we are having in southern ontario lately,it will start to climb in temp as I am sitting and idling.Just not too comfortable with that.

Thanks for the info
