Headers on a 200ci...how much difference?

An interesting thread. Two points:

1. It's all bench racing without dyno results and/or before and after ET slips.
2. The exhaust is part of a larger system. If the manifold/exhaust is a bottleneck, removing the bottleneck will likely improve performance. If you have a large-log head with bigger valves, will the new exhaust/headers help take advantage of the improved airflow through the head? There are lots of variables. See item 1 above. ;)

I put the aussie duel outlet on my 160 falcon with the original 144 engine. I have a 200 to swap in when completed.

I know it is expensive but I do not want to deal with headers and the starter can be removed easily.
I have a writeup on here with pictures just search my user id.

Headers can be a pain. Cast manifold will be less likely to leak. At least on an i6 you can see them😎.

Maybe due to long tube headers? What brand headers?
I have heard that long tube headers add more low end torque than short headers. And I agree that replacing the entire exhaust system was a factor. In the Falcon Performance Handbook they discuss replacing the small restrictive stock exhaust pipe as a foundation for future upgrades. Sounds like you made a good move and got good results bet it sounds nice too. Maybe will notice an increase in mileage?

Those look really cool too!

great to see a 17 y/o thread revived. I remember the discussion. In my build I modded toward the science. See the flow bench tests,
study the reality. “Tech Archive” @ final blue horrizontal line above. I’m gunna go look again, its been a decade~
EDIT:
Cant find what I remember (like “5 - 7% improvement w/headers if no other changes”) but DID C AKMiller again:
“... we went to the dyno to see what gains we had
made with the header system. Much to our surprise, we re-
corded 86 horsepower, or a net gain of 10 horsepower at the
rear wheels and ..."(ata low cost to us as well)

my headers are on: for the looks, sound & (research it?) port divider (@ 3/4) to split the gases and hold the gasket. Ie.

I like the SS as it reminds me of the chrome on the motorcycle (same place) but never thought there’d B much of an add-on.
Sought out the long tube (due 2* of multipurpose rig) but just no can do (& project is too long term for that extra). Still, 5% aint
nuttin @ 10HP (I seek the tq anyway).

Ebay long tube headers, and your 100% correct. The long tube 2 1/4" headers made whatever hp I gained. I was really surprised at the gain. It feels like the engine can breathe finally.

U mention ‘flowmasters’ which seem 2B all chambered. Of the 3, 4 designs I see the ‘turbo’ design the most performance oriented ("street”. The race design (straight thru) offers more but not 4 me as I daily (my own ears / cops in this Commonwealth) ~

Glad to see no one is focusing/discussing ‘note' or sound. THAT is opinion, not science so abt one’s taste, style, etc (Like: “This car looks good”.) W/the 1st comment on it, it goes off the rails in my opinion.

Short v long tube have different performance gains.
“...The long tube 2 1/4" headers made whatever hp I gained..."

In the original 40 series Flowmasters they do say they're chambered. All there inside them are 3 or 4 1/2" high V shaped strips of 1/8th steel. I blew some air through them and I couldn't detect any back resistance. The chambers are off set unlike the race design which are basically like running with just headers. Super loud and guaranteed to get you pulled over by every cop you drive by, also someone mentioned that you have to move, or remove the alternator for the long tube headers. I thought the same thing, but was pleasantly surprised when I was able to bolt them on with plenty of clearance from both the alternator and the the large starter.

Mine are already installed.
Please see image. No port decider.

“... a port divider (@ 3 / 4)... and hold the gasket..."
that could skip a decider

long time since a long tube (hooker, wuz it 6066?) for these. Most
go for the HP instead (CI/VI/SpeedDaddy) a modified shortie.

Just curious, does a magnet stick to those stainless headers?

I've sent several ebay messages to multiple sellers of these stainless headers asking them what grade of stainless they are, if they are coated/painted, etc, and have yet to receive one reply.

Good to hear that they fit perfectly for @jcom4179. That's encouraging. What year and model is your car?

Probably can't speak English, or the msg didn't make it across the Pacific.

These Hooker 6601 and Cyclone long tube headers still on the Ebay. I received a message from the Hooker seller that he would take 300 plus shipping $75 from Oregon. I already have the 6601 and 6602 in my inventory so saw no point in buying but was tempted because these are rarely available. Not stainless but you can have them coated.
