it just started recently and gets worse everytime i drive it...but its a nast squeel that happens when i accelerate...belts are all tight..could they be overtight? but i have my powersteering and alternator on the same side of the engine so the water pump pulley is pretty much being pulled in that direction...aslo i have the large stock flex fan and i like to go to 4,000 RMP a lot, so maybe its had enough abuse...does it sound like i need a new water pump...doesnt quite sound like its coming from the alternator cause i had it squeel when i was under the hood too and reving it...so i figgure its the water pump...any second opinions before i go spending money because if i do the water pump i'm gonna go buy one of those ultralightweight fans that are good to 8,000 RPM....

It's really hard to diagnose squeals without actually hearing it. I've killed 2 water pumps from having the belt over tightened. There shoudl be about 1/2" of play in the belt, meaning if you press down on the belt in between the water pump and either of the 2 accesories, the belt should move down 1/2" without severe effort on your part. Remember, V belts don't need quite the tension that serpentines doo.

:( ok...thanks guys. looks like I'm gonna get another pump and fan....the belt doesnt have any play in it  but i will remember the 1/2" play for next time. Its pretty embarassing driving around in a squeeling car.

I took off my belt and it was pretty glazed and the pulley had a nice mirror finish to it...i got a new belt...havent taken it for a drive, but while it was all off i shook and played with the pulleys and nothing is noticeably loose so i'll find out in a bit when i take er to my buds house tonight if it still sqeels, Ive never had a belt squeel that loud before but who knows...i'll be really happy if i dont have to replace the pump...just scared me.

I have a belt squeal so loud for awhile that I used to start the car up and drive out of my neighborhood as fast as I could.

Turned out the water pump was leaking onto the belt causing it to be very loud.

yea...it was just an overglazed belt...it doesnt sqeel anymore (sure was scary)....does anyone have any tricks though for that...i heard that rubbing candle wax over the belt while it was running would give it enough grip to stop the sqeel...never tried it though.

I believe candle wax actually quiets the slipping action by "lubricating" it, in my opinion a temporary fix that only makes matters worse. You can buy a belt dressing spray at auto parts stores that is supposed to soften the belt and break down the glaze, but I've found these to be temporary fixes as well.

Installing a new belt is the best way to go. Tighten it to the correct tension and see how it fares. If you find it glazes up quickly, you either need to run your belts a little tighter or look at the "V"s in your pulleys and see it they are worn out or the wrong size. I believe you can even special order extra wide v-belts to band-aid worn pulleys.

I know a guy who actually put on enough of that belt dressing crap that his belt fell off!

I use the wax trick to quiet down noisy belts, I don't think it would cure a slipping one tho...

I've heard a trick to use a scotchbrite pad on the v grooves in the pulley to help it grip.

i got NON waterpump on the engine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

got a remote electric pump with cannister and flows more when the temp is rizing and slow down when it is cooler .

well i did the scotchbrite thing on the pulleys cause they were looking way too shiney (nice mirror finish...wish i could get that on my other engine parts) so hopefully that helps keep the belt from glazing again...an electric fan is definitely in future plans...an electric water pump would be great, what kind did u get the66mustang?

i did fab something like this up for the mustang .

Harrie....you are by far...the most ingenious person I have had the opportunity to know..even if by PM. The things you come up with are always "outside" the box

Harrie, it looks like you are an ace in water engineering too. Mind you, you've been able to practice like your life depends on it.

Buickroadster runs an electric pump, too. He's made a flat steel coverplate for the front of the motor, mounted another water neck there, and chromed it all. Looks "cool" :P . Though, with all the rain this week, a "topless" car probably isn't a such a neat thing!

Adam.

Dutch as a people are excellent at moving water.....

i paid attention during the tour of Holland I took in 1999...
