Oil Pump Clearance Issues

I have my 78 Fairmont block partially torn down and as I was removing the oil pump I noticed that the bolt holding down the #2 bearing cap has been filed/shaved so that 50% of it is missing in order not to hit the pump. Also, there is no gasket between the pump and the block.

1. Is it normal (or acceptable) to have a shaved bolt to allow for pump clearance?

2. Is a gasket needed between the pump and the block?

Thanks-

well i dont see the gasketbeing a big problem except for the possibiltity of loosing ol pressure unless it has a good enough seal. the shaved bolt i wouldnt think is normal how are you going to get it off? when some rebuilt it they shoudlve put the right oil pump in to begin with.

Thanks! So there IS supposed to be a gasket there?

I think I can get the bolt off using a little "messaging" with my open end wrenches and vice grips, but if I put a proper one on I suspect I'll have clearance problems again.

Well, this looks pretty simple. Whoever assembled the motor used an oil pump from an early 4 main block on your 7 main block. The early 4 main bearing motors don´t have a main bearing adjacent to where the oil pump mounts.

Get the right pump and a new main bolt. Be sure to also check the distributor and it´s drive shaft diameter. The early motors used a 1/4¨diameter, which was later enlarged to 5/16¨.

I don't know if it would be a problem on Grandma's rebuild but one the RPM starts to rise it will be necessary to have all the strength you can get on your Main Cap.

The gasket is just a simple paper gasket.

I would also be concerned that the ports line up as well.

I'd rather not go to the 'yard and go through all the trouble to pull off an oil pan just to get to the oil pump. If I were to order one at a parts store, what car/model/year pump wound I ask for? Does anyone have a pic of the proper unit?

Good, using a used oil pump is sort of like using a used, umm, well, you know!

the stock bolts will fit the stock oil pump. i used arp bolts with washer when i rebuilt my 200 and that one bolt did not clear so i used the stcok bolt on the main cap by the oil pump and ARP all around.

why rebuild an engine and not go for a new pump, it's only like $40 more.

Thanks everyone!
I jut ordered the part from Partsamerica.com
"AE Clevite Engine Parts 6011096 601-1096 OIL PUMP"
and it will be here Wednesday.
