Rotor question

I recently bought a distributor on Ebay for my 200 engine and tonight added the Pertronix ignitor, a new rotor (which it did not have when I bought the distributor), and new distributor cap. This may be a dumb question, but this is my first attempt at this, but should the rotor "float" or spin freely on the shaft/lubricating wick inside the distributor or am I missing something? I have a Mustang shop manual and have installed this thing with the metal clip facing upward.
Thanks,
Steve

it should spin with the shaft, and the shaft should move when you move the rotor. if they move seperate of each other, that won't work. the shaft should be round (about 2/3 of the surface area) with a flat side, check to see if its worn for some reason. the rotor could misshaped too, check it to see if it is defective.

by the way i have a load o matic distributor im not using, if you want it you can have it for shipping cost.

Patrick,
Thanks, I looked online at Autozone last night and believe that I got the wrong rotor. This one does not engage with the shaft, it just spins freely. I appreciate the offer on the distributor and may take you up on it if I can't get mine to work.

So, I go back to Autozone with the distributor and get a different rotor that fits down on the main shaft correctly. I go back home and when I get there, try the distributor cap and...it will not fit down onto the distributor and rotor by more than one inch. With the new rotor, it is simply too tall.

My distributor has a C7DF12170 part number which I have decoded to be a 1967 date code distributor for a falcon, mustang, or granada. What do I have?

Patrick, I think I'll take you up on your offer of the distributor. Let me know your mailing address and the shipping cost and I'll get payment in the mail to you.

cap and rotor need replaced and a good cleaning, other than that i think its fine.

a 67 should be a load o matic distributor, in 68 they began using duraspark 1's (i think).

Nope, 68 was points, non-Load-O. Duraspark wasn't until 74 or 75.
