Looking to decide whether to turbo my inline 6 - 1966 ford mustang or just 4 barrel/intake and headers ? What kind of upgrades are street practical - yet fun to drive :)
If its available -where should i look for turbo and other needed parts ?
Thanks

I have a 67 vert 200/c4. I installed a 2300 sniper thru a 2x1 carb adaptor ,a 3 into 1 split header & dual exhaust on it & it runs pretty darn good for an otherwise stock eng. After I got the duals on on went for a short test drive . When I turned around to head back home I pulled it down in 1st ran it up to 50 ,70 in second & still pulling strong when it hit 3rd. Not going to blow anybody's doors off but like I said pretty darn good for a fairley stock six.

Its soon to get a cam & alumn head on it & I hope it runs even better. When I posted a similar question to yours on the vintage mustang forum that included the alumn head in the equation a member replied with some pretty good hp numbers & they went up considerably when he put a turbo on it but he said it had pinched some rings & he was rebuilding it with more sturdier parts.

My advise is plan your engine mods with an eye on an alumn head or a modified large log head ,a cam that's streetable,an exhaust system & if it's a straight shift the guys on the vmf site swear by the t5 trans for the six cyl cars. Just know it's never going to run like a v8 but if you do it right that six can make a lot of them go dam that's a six cyl.

I'd do as the last author. INCREMENTAL up grades. Try sompin small'n cheep, build on that till you hit ur budget, time, expertise. The 1st step on all this is (if U have not done it) ID all the components in ur rig. There could B anything there after all these yrs & numerous owners. Then research the model. What are it's capacities? This will give U realistic expectations. One fella here dida full tilt boogie on his i6 & sold it 2, 3 yrs after complete for a meh bent8 and was totally happy frm what I've heard (so wuz the i6-er who got his old motor). Not enuff ID & research - money spent, time spent (but not "lost" !).
We use "the Handbook" and while waiting for delivery peruse the tech archive above at the blue horizontal line.
When done ur research - U can compare what U have (just IDed it) to what U want (this model's capacity). Many start w/a simple advance 2, 4* beyond the ford spec. Not enuff, an ign up grade? Still not there? may B higher lift rockers? BUT pretty soon U find out an auto isa system. Change 1 thing 1 place it effects all the others....more upgrades to match those other ones. Try the Handbook & tech archive...U will then have the Qs we can help U with...

Hot spark ignition, like a DUI or DSII is a quick, cheap upgrade. Between that, replacing the Autolite 1100, and a header will give you a nice bump in performance. I’m swapping in a large log head with those upgrades and expect to see a nice bump in performance and driveability.

What about a supercharger? Not the gert huge vacuum cleaners the 'orrible, disjointed V8s have, but a small one sat down where the alternator sits? Driven off the crankshaft nose? Used one's off stuff like mercedes, etc are fairly compact. [I'm in UK, so don't have the access to the kit you USA-ers have] A supercharger will 'work' right from tickover if set up right.

Not worried about the V8 thing - when I need a fix - I take out my 2001 Bullitt ! Just tryin to get ideas that wont kill the wallet. I guess I'll try upgraded intake (carb & such) - and header ! I like the six for what it is - and i get that if I go turbo its a complete rebuild.

Any ideas about finding the intake at ?

An intake cannot be installed on the stock head.
If you look at the intake manifold on your 200 six you will notice it is cast as part of the head.
The only straight forward way to install a 4 barrel carburetor is to get the aluminum head from Vintage Inlines which has a separate bolt on intake manifold for a 4 barrel carb.
Some have gone as far as to machine the intake side of the stock iron head off and made their own intake manifolds.

You can turbocharge your engine without a rebuild if you keep the boost moderate, under 10 psi
Any type of turbocharger installation will be home made.
You can use the later model iron head that has the larger intake log so you can modify the log to accept a 2 barrel carburetor.
Then you can use the Holley Sniper or Super Sniper 2300 as a blow through system with a turbocharger.

did mike cast his own yet?
