Ok, today I noticed some squeaks in the engine compartment that have me more than a little concerened.
The sqeaks are when the car is in gear and brakes are applied and right when I turn the motor off. When in Neutral park or simply driving there are no noticable squeaks. I checked the belt out and other than being a little over a year old, it is in decent shape. No noticable glazzing, cracks or sections missing.
I am kind of thinking in the direction of water pump. Does the water pump squeak or squeel when the bearings are going out? The pump is about 1 year old.

On my brothers mustang there started be a bad squeak and we replaced the water pump and it went away. So maybe it is your water pump

I am going to do some troubleshooting to try to rule out the water pump since I have the next couple of days off. Should my water pump be going south, does anyone know of a high performance water pump for the Ford, 200 I6?
Ted

my pump squealed like a woman who saw a shoe sale right before it died...but only on start up and shut down...running it was quiet. the bearings go in them...

Yeh, I may as well go ahead and replace it this weekend. That kind of "Blows goats", I've only had the water pump since June of last year. I was just out troubleshooting. Like I said the belt seems to be fine and it's not over tightened. Such is life.!

I'll let you know how it goes when I am done.
Thanks.
Ted

Don't know of any real hi-po water pumps, but there are two styles of the early pump, one with a cast impeller and one with a stamped steel impeller. FWIW, the cast impeller is a better design than the stamped steel version.

water pumps are like taht...seems like you will go thru 3 if one goes bad...

then one will last a really long time

Ted, take the drive belt off the water pump & see if the noise stops.
There was a previous post on a fellow who sold aluminium water pumps.
If i can find his name & phone number i'll post it. :D william

those aluminum pumps mentioned were found listed under the fairmont six's at local auto parts stores.

Also there is a long neck and short neck. What year did they change?

I replaced the water pump last Friday and the noise is gone. I figure the problem is solved. I sent the water pump back to Mustangs Plus and they will let me know if I can get another water pump or if I will only get a partial credit.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Ted
